Monteiro was 21 when he started racing in the French Porsche Carrera Cup in 1996. In the first year of his Formula One career he set a new record for the most finishes by a driver in a season (18), and also achieved a podium position at the highly controversial United States GP 2005. Tiago and 2 associates bought GP2 team BCN Competicion in Nov 2008 and changed the name to Ocean Racing Technology. Injured in a testing accident at the end of 2017 (while leeding WTCC and missed the final 4 races) he was unconscious for six full hours afterwards. He had hit the wall at around 160mph. Monteiro suffered compressed nerves and three broken ribs, he ripped his bicep from the bone and he snapped the muscles that control eye movement. it took fourteen months before he was even ready to sit in a racing car again.
