When Stephen got his chance to drive with McLaren at the Long Beach GP 1980, he was fired from the Toleman F2 team before the season began. Later in the season he had a part of his leg amputated following a Can-Am accident in a Paul Newman Lola. Brian Henton who got Stephens seat with Toleman went on to win the European F2 series.
