It was planned for a F1 season 1974 and Wheatcroft hired an STP March for a couple of races to allow Williamson to become acclimatised. In his only second race at Zandvoort, it is thought that a tyre failed, the car ran into an inadequately secured barrier which launched it across the track. The car came to rest upside down and on fire, with Roger trapped in the cockpit. David Purley single-handedly attempted to right the inverted machine. But the fire caught hold with no chance to save Roger.
