At a F2 race at Zandvoort, Clay was involved in Chris Lambert’s fatal accident. The fall-out from this incident was to last for some time, Regazzoni was eventually absolved from blame. Won at the third GP he enterd. Took Williams team’s first-ever Grand Prix win at Silverstone 1979. At the Long Beach GP 1980, the brake pedal snapped and he crashed into a concrete wall, Clay was trapped in the car for more than twenty five minutes sustained serious spinal damage in addition to a broken leg, which then confined him to a wheelchair. Clay's post-racing career as a commentator was brought to an end when he was killed in a car accident near Parma, Italy december 2006. His car was involved in a head on collision with a lorry. Clay is the third ex-Ferrari GP driver to be killed in a simular accident.
