Killed at the South African GP 1977 when he hit marshal Jansen Van Vuuren as he crossed the track carrying a fire extinguisher to put out the flames of Renzo Zorzi's retired Shadow, the extinguisher hit Tom's helmet ripping it of his head causing the chin strap to nearly decapitate Tom. A memorial to Pryce was unveiled in 2009 in his home town of Ruthin. The Tom Pryce Award (aka Tom Pryce Trophy) is given annually to Welsh personalities who have made an outstanding contribution to motoring or transport.
