At Monza GP 1978 Ronnie became involved in a first-lap multiple crash, which left him suffering from severe leg injuries. Once in hospital complications set in. He slipped into a coma and within hours he was gone. Ronnie had a signed contract as the number one driver with Mclaren 1979.
Gilles Villeneuve once said why he didn't put too much value on the driver title: "How much can it be worth - when Peterson never won it?"
Offered to drive for Ferrari to replace N Lauda after his crash 1976, the car was prepered for a test but all was cancelled in the last minute by Lauda.
