Turned down an offer to race in F1 1983 with ATS. When he signed with Tyrrell for 1984 it also gave the team an option on his services in 1985, 1986 and 1987. At the Spa 1000km 1985 he tried to pass Ickx on the inside going into Eau Rouge. The two cars touched and both crashed. Bellof was killed in the impact.
